Racial Disparity In Public Transportation

"The more access an individual has to mobility, the better life conditions they would have in regards to other aspects: housing accommodations, job opportunities, health and medical care."

Public transportation is a basic necessity, yet it has somehow become a privilege in our constantly changing society. There have been several controversies in the U.S regarding public transportation and why it has been limited to a certain group of people. While its function is to give a mode of transportation for everyone, it has become severely limited to low-income communities.

Free public transportation enables many people coming from low-income communities to save money, lessening their everyday expenses, which allows them to pay off their monthly rent and bills while still having extra money for further use. Public transportation shouldn’t be a privilege that creates a larger divide between the rich and the poor; its function is to provide sustainable mobility that can accommodate the needs of transit dependent riders and the general public.

Although many white-collared Americans are able to work within the safety of their homes, public health care workers must put their lives at risk by working at hospitals and using public transportation. Public transportation is a basic need for the ones we call “Heroes”, they are our public health care workers.
